Slater Fight to Take the ICT National Titles

Hesketh Golf Club

25-27th April

The Intercollegiate Golf Tour National Finals were hosted at Hesketh Golf Club on the west coast with over 90 of the top golfing students in the country on show. Being near the sea the course was in a prime location for strong winds, which were definitely delivered for day one. With 36 holes on the first day the players were welcomed by 40 mph winds which made conditions extremely difficult and made the day a tiring one. The Balby team struggled like the rest of the field in round one as the wind made play tough. Morning round of 82 for Nicola Slater (Lindrick GC +1) put her 9 shots behind the leader in the girls event which was a disappointing start but one which would push her to charge up the leaderboard in the afternoon. The boys event was not much closer with Oliver Sullivan (Phoenix GC 3) shooting 78 which put him 5 behind the leader along with 2 Balby team mates Owen Musgrave, 78 and George Mason, 78. Going into the afternoon round and the second 18 holes of the day all was the play for. In this Balby needed to hunt down the leaders.

Nicola Slater came fighting back with an incredible 14 shot improvement in the second round with a remarkable best of the day score of 68, 4 under par. This still put her 4 shots behind the girl’s leader however it edged her closer to the top of the leaderboard. Sullivan also came fighting back in the afternoon with a 7 shot improvement to shoot 71, 1 over par. This was enough to secure his place in the final playing group on the last day.

With all the play for in the final 18 holes Slater and Sullivan came out fighting trying to catch the leaders. Nicola birdied the last in order to beat Ebonie Lewis from Hartpury by just 1 shot and to card another great round and best of the whole competition of 67 (-5 under par). This reduces Nicolas handicap from +1 to +2. Oliver also had a crucial finish to secure his victory, finishing birdie, birdie and an incredible up and down on the last for par and a gross 72 to fend off Stuart Thurlow from Elmwood College, also by just 1 shot. This has reduced Olivers handicap from 3 down to 2. So the Balby team had secured both Individual National Championship Titles.

In the team event it was comprised of 6 players with the best 4 scores per round to count in both the gross and nett competition. The team didn’t have a bad finish coming third in both the gross and nett competition. They finished 12 shots behind the leaders in the nett competition overall and 8 shots behind the leaders in the gross competition. This is another fantastic achievement and the team should be proud of their performances. The team was made up of:

Nicola Slater +1 Lindrick & Woodsome Hall GC, Oliver Sullivan 3 Phoenix GC, Owen Musgrave 2 Forest Pines Golf Club, George Mason 2 Wath GC, Harrison Naylor 4 Phoenix GC and Jack Wilson 8 Doncaster GC.

Overall another fantastic all round performance by the Balby Academy of Sport golfers at the national finals. Finally, we are seeking anybody or a company that would like to sponsor this elite squad.
