https://www.britishschoolsgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/f2xkZ.pngAfter an extremely early 5.30 am start to travel across the notoriously busy M62 to Lancashire and the Fylde Coast, the Balby Squads were quietly confident of putting a strong defence of their Northern Schools Trophy.  This would not be an easy task on the difficult links test that Fleetwood Golf Club always provides. In the extremely challenging windy conditions, Balby Academy of Sport stormed to victory with a brilliant score of 147 shots and a clear 2 shot winning margin. Playing for Balby’s A squad were  Charlie Daughtrey, Scratch (Rotherham Golf Club), Nicola Slater +1 (Lindrick and Woodsome Hall Golf Clubs) who took the title on the day. Charlie had a brilliant round of 69 (3 under Par) which was also good enough to grab him the overall individual gross champion. His score was backed up by Nicola Slater who shot a well battled out 78 (only 5 over par to the ladies 73) after a slow start she managed to hold onto her round for the remainder of the bad weather. (Pictured above are the Team Champions Nicola Slater and Charlie Daughtrey with the Northern Schools Trophy).

https://www.britishschoolsgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/IMG_0940.pngIt was double success for both Charlie and Nicola. In the boys Gross Competition Charlie (Pictured Left) held of several England golfers to claim the Individual gross Champion by a single shot. This has reduced his handicap back to +1. This was equally matched by Nicola (Pictured below right)who was crowned girls individual gross champion in the girls event.

https://www.britishschoolsgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/IMG_8072.pngBalby’s C team was made up of Liam Bennett, 5 (Retford Golf Club) who got off to a steady start but Liam struggled around the turn carding a disasterous 9 on the par 5 9th but fought back to shoot a creditable 5 over par 77. Although this was level handicap he would have hoped for better after a solid start. Balby B’s second player Owen Musgrave,2 (Forest Pines Golf Club) who battled hard in the windy conditions eventually carding an 4 over par 76 score. This left them with a team score of 153 and in 7th place.

Jack Wilson, 2 (Hallowes Golf Club) had a great start being on 1 over par through 8 holes but he slipped around the turn to a 3 over par but managed to hold his round together to shoot a creditable 75 and remain at 3 over par. Unfortunately his partner, George Mason 3 (Wath & Rotherham Golf Club) has an eventful day where his good golf was superb but his bad golf disastrous. He carded 6 birdies but mixed in were bogeys and double bogeys where he ended up shooting an 8 over par 80 for a team score of 155 and tied for 10th place.

So in this year’s tournament, Balby were crowned Champions again.  Overall Balby had a brilliant day away at Fleetwood Golf Club with a first in the gross team competition, a seventh and tied 10th place finish in the team competition and both Nicola and Charlie being crowned Individual gross Champions. This was a huge achievement and one they will be looking to match in their next national finals in both April at Hesketh Golf Club in the Intercollegiate Tour Finals and Trevose in the British Schools and Colleges Finals. Hopefully after our warm weather training trip to Portugal over the Easter holidays has helped our students refine their skills ready for the upcoming finals.
