14th & 16th March

This week Balby hosted the ICT round 3 at Retford Golf Club and also travelled to Fleetwood to play the rescheduled round 4 match. The weather had a big impact on both of the fixtures as the Beast from the East took it’s toll on the Balby team. 2 fixtures in one week is a tough ask for any team and this showed as the Wednesday fixture didn’t go as planned for either A or B team. The A team included Nicola Slater (Lindrick GC +1) who shot respectable 71, Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham GC scratch) who shot 76 which allowed him to remain top of the order of merit following this round. Next up was Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines GC 2) he came in

with reasonable 74. The last of the A teams qualifying scored came from George M

ason (Wath GC 3) who shot 75 leaving Balby A on a total of 296.  Other players in the team who’s scores didn’t count was Jack Wilson (Hallows GC 2) who shot 78 and Liam Bennett (Retford GC 5) with a 79 gross. The A team came 2nd to Myerscough and further behind in the league table with a chance of qualifying.

Unfortunately the B team didn’t lift the mood having finished 3rd on the day in the nett standings. The team didn’t set off to a bad start with Jedd Pressely (Worksop GC 5) shooting a gross 74 for a nett 69 and Lewis Harrison (Birley Wood GC 5) who shot 72 for a nett 67. Scores from here were not the best unfortunately with Ralf Marshall (Retford GC 5) shooting 82, Trafford Grimes (Lincoln GC 11) shot 86 which left a disappointing 75 which was a dip in his previous performances. Lewis Branagan (Sitwell Park GC 5) set off to a struggling start however played to his handicap from then on and battled out an 81 for a nett 76. The final score came from Andrew Cooke (Bawtry GC 18) who shot a nett 75.

Having had few team changes the team set out extra early for another match on Friday away at Fleetwood. High winds and occasional rain added an extra challenge for the teams however Balby had a bounce back performance. Balby B were the stars of the show winning the nett standings on the day by 6 shots over Myerscough. Balby B’s players included Jack Harris (Doncaster GC 7) who shot 79 for a nett 72, Harrison Naylor (Phoenix GC 4) who shot 74 for a nett 70. Following this was Jedd Pressley 85 nett 80 (Worksop GC 5) Lewis Harrison (Birley Wood GC 5) had a gross 75 for a nett 70, another impressive under handicap performance for him. Declan Stoppard (Doncaster GC 5) shot 78 gross for a nett 73 very steady round too. Andrew Cooke (Bawtry GC 18) also carded an 87 gross for a creditable below handicap nett 69.

Balby A also put out a strong fighting performance as they tried to gain a place in the finals. The first player for Balby A was Nicola Slater (Lindrick GC +1) who shot 71, following her came Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham GC Scratch) who shot an uncharacteristic 76. They were closely followed by Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines GC 2) with a 79 gross. Jack Wilson (Hallowes GC 2) then delivered a much needed 73 to close the gap between Balby and Myerscough. Next in was George Mason (Wath GC 3) having not played to his best in the tough conditions he carded a 78 gross. The final player for Balby A was Lewis Eccles (Dewsbury GC 4) who was a new edition to the team, the conditions got the better of Lewis and unfortunately he came in with an 81 gross. Overall, the team has a combined score of 298 which was only 4 shots behind Myerscough.
