Balby Remain Top Spot After Close Clash In Fleetwood

Fleetwood Golf Club

15th November 2017

This was the second match of the ICT (Intercollegiate Tour), hosted by Myerscough at Fleetwood Golf Club. This week’s match was an epic battle between Balby and Myerscough Colleges at Fleetwood Golf Club. After the 5.30am coach pick up the team tried to get sleep to enable them to perform to their peak performance.

However after a 4 hour journey with many delays the preparation was less than ideal.

Balby A put out a strong competitive performance with a team total of 6 under par for the 4 team player scores. First out for Balby A was Charlie Daughtrey, right (Rotherham GC Scr). He shot an impressive -3, although he said that he had struggled at times on the newly holo-cored greens. Next for Balby A was Nicola Slater, below (Woodsome Hall GC +1) with a bounce back performance of -1 on the ladies par of 73 with 2 courtesy shots making it a -2 following last week’s poor performance. Balby’s great play continued further down the field with Jack Wilson (Hallows GC 2) shooting -1 and George Mason (Wath GC 3) shot a steady level par 72. Other team members were Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines 2) and Liam Bennett (Retford GC 5). Neither of them had horrific scores with Owen shooting +1 and Liam +4, however, their efforts just weren’t enough to count to the team total of 213. Balby A were unfortunately just piped to the post for top position by Myerscough A, who won by a mere 3 shots on 210.

Balby B didn’t have the best day on the other hand. New players were introduced into the team and were handed the debuts to put up a fight. Jedd Presley (Worksop GC 8) was one of these players. He had a rough start however held his never to post a solid score of 7 over which was a 79 nett 71, 1 under his handicap. The next new addition to the team was Andrew Cooke (Bawtry GC 19). Having posted many good nett scores in previous games he didn’t disappoint. Andrew shot a one under par net 71 with a 89 gross score.

Balby B also had Trafford Grimes (Lincoln GC 11) who shot a 80 which equalled a nett 69, 3 under his handicap. Jack Harris (Doncaster GC 7) another Balby B player didn’t have his day. He shot a gross 82 which was only a nett 75, this was just a slight dip in his recent good form. Other players also struggled and put in uncharacteristic performances. These included Harrison Naylor (Phoenix GC 4) and Ralf Marshall (Retford GC 5). Harrison shot a gross 83 after a poor front 9, where he kept fighting to post a level back 9. Ralf shot an 81, these players will sure to be back to good form.

Overall, on the day Balby A came second in the gross competition having put out a strong performance which leaves them tied first in the overall league standings after the first 2 games. In the nett overall league, Balby A are tied with Balby B and Myerscough B in second place half a point behind Lee Westwood Cheshire.

In the Individual Gross Score Order of Merit Balby have Charlie Daughtrey at the top with 5 more players in the top 10 places. This is a great achievement with just 3 more matches to play before the finals in May 2018

The next match for Balby is next week at High Leigh Park GC Knutsford, hosted by Westwood Cheshire in the ICT league. Let’s hope both teams fighting spirit continues and they put in a strong performance to secure their places in the finals.
