Opening round success for Balby in ICT
Round 1, Retford Golf Club
18th October 2017
This was the round 1 of the ICT (Intercollegiate Tour), hosted by Balby at Retford Golf Club. Balby A and B both put out a strong leading performance, with A at the top of the gross and B at the top of the nett.
First out for Balby A was Charlie Daughtrey right, (Rotherham GC Scr) who came in with a magnificent 5 under, 66 to set a fantastic start for the team. Next for Balby A was George Mason (Wath GC 3) who shot a steady 74. Following George came Nicola Slater (Woodsome Hall GC +1) who shot 73, not her best however this didn’t put Balby A out of the mix. Another player who didn’t have their best day was Tom Slattery (Sitwell GC 4) shooting a poor 82. Oliver Sullivan (Phoenix GC 3) played whilst struggling for a groin injury, he also shot 82. Bringing up the rear for Balby A was Owen Musgrave left, (Forest Pines 2) who shot a brilliant 69, which secured a first place victory for the team in the gross and second place on the order of merit for himself.
Balby B also had their own victory winning the nett league. Trafford Grimes (Lincoln GC 12) shot a wonderful 2 over which give him a nett 61, a whole 10 under his handicap. Another great nett score came from Liam Bennett (Retford GC 6) home course advantage provided essential, as he shot a level par round of 71 which was a nett 65. Balby B also had Declan Stoppard (Doncaster GC 5) shot a steady 75 which gave him a nett 70. At the back of the field was Harrison Naylor (Phoenix GC 4) who didn’t have the best day shooting 78. Lewis Harrison (Birley Wood GC 6) also didn’t have a great day as he shot an 81 gross.
Following the match was the rest of the golf academy who unfortunately didn’t gain a place in this week’s team. Many of them put up a good performance in their fight for a place in the team for the next match. Andrew Cooke (Bawtry GC 19) put in a superb score of 81 for a nett 62 which is 9 under his handicap. Other players such as Sam Sharman (Rotherham GC 8) carded an impressive 77 for a nett 69. Another nett 69 came from Ralf Marshall (Retford GC 5) who shot 74. Jack Harris (Doncaster GC 7) also made a statement putting himself out there for team selection with a super 72 for a nett 64. Jedd Pressley (Worksop GC 8) threw in a steady round of 78 for a nett 70 as well as Lewis Eccles (Waterfront GC 4) who had a 74, nett 70.
The next match for Balby is the 8th November at Wishaw GC in the British Schools and colleges. Let’s hope both teams fighting spirit continues on to secure places in the finals.
