Wishaw winds prove no match for Balby Academy of Sport
Wishaw Golf Club
11th October 2017
Balby Academy of Sport “B” managed to score a team total of 229 to win the best gross team on the day. They also won the nett league again, near enough confirming their place in the finals. It was a tough day with extremely strong winds, which made it cool and difficult to control the flight of the golf ball. There were 3 greens which were hollow corded which added an extra challenge to these holes.
First up for Balby B was Liam Bennett (Retford GC 5), he didn’t get off to the best start with a shot on the first going OB. He finished up shooting 82. Next up for Balby B was Oliver Sullivan (Phoenix GC 3) like Liam he finished up shooting an 82 which has a dip on previous performances. Tom Slattery (Sitwell 5) was the third team member, he shot a super 5 in the high winds which resulted in a handicap reduction. Bring up the rear for Balby B
was George Mason, left, (Wath GC 3) who shot an excellent 72 that enabled him to be the individual gross champion on the day. This excellent score secures top ranking points that will allow him to shoot up the order of merit ranking.
Balby Academy of Sport “A” on the other hand had a much improved day compared to the first few rounds as they came 2nd in both the nett and gross competitions. First out was Nicola Slater (Woodsome Hall +1) she came in with a 77 which is 4 over her par which set a steady but not brilliant start for Balby A. Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines GC 3) shot a 77 which kept his joint 4th position on the order of merit. The third team member for Balby A was Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham GC +1) he was having a good round until he made a quadruple bogey 7 on the par 3 17th.
However, he birdied the last for a 76 which wasn’t horrendous. The last player was Lewis Branagan (Sitwell 5) however he didn’t have his best performance shooting a disappointing 85.
In the Individual Order of Merit table Balby are starting to dominate securing 5 out of the 6 top places. George Mason’s excellent winning round pulls him up to second place closely followed by Oliver Sullivan who was victorious in round 1, Team Captain Nicola Slater, Owen Musgrave and round two joint winner Charlie Daughtrey.
Overall, there was a mixed bag of results on the day. The standard scratch went up 3 meaning that it was made into a reductions only. We go forward into next week at the top of both the nett and gross leagues, where we will try and remain dominant in both. Next week we are the hosts once again at Retford Golf Club. Let’s hope it will remain as successful as previous matches.
