Lake District Residential - July 2017

19th July 2017

On 12th July 2017 we took 29 Y7 students to Great Tower Scout Adventure Centre in Cumbria in the Lake District. The 2 night, 3 day trip included a variety of team building and outdoor activities which were both fun and challenging for the students. The trip focused on helping students to improve their confidence and courage. Students were able to push themselves to their limits taking part in activities such as low ropes, raft building and leap of faith. They had to use their wits and teamwork to complete group problem solving challenges on tree trunks and through outdoor games. They also had to work efficiently in order to create and build their own fire, and use exceptional concentration and aim in order to succeed in archery.

Students this year had the fantastic opportunity to participate in activities on Lake Windermere. Students were lucky enough to take part in raft building and kayaking.  As a team, students had to design their own raft using logs, barrels and string. In the process they had to learn to tie various knots. Students then had to create their design before testing it on the water to see if it would float – some designs were much more successful than others!

On the last night students got to show off their singing voices and dance moves at the campfire. They sang their hearts out and afterwards we all toasted marshmallows over the fire. Students rose to the daily ‘room inspections’ challenge providing outstanding bribes to the judges! In their own time students were very well behaved exploring the site, playing cards and of course looking for ‘Peggy’!!!!!

We were extremely lucky to have fantastic weather for the whole of the trip. Students were an absolute credit to the school and a particular big shout out needs to go to Emily Miles and Tèa Riley for the Balby Carr Sixth Form Coaching and Teaching Academy. The students attended the trip as assistants and were amazing leaders and role models to the Y7 students – well done girls!!! Top boy and girl of the trip were awarded to Matthew Fletcher and Jorgie Derrick for their amazing attitude, maturity and conduct through the entire trip. The students had a fantastic time and made all of their teachers and leaders proud! An overall fabulous experience for all.
