Balby Successful at the South Yorkshire Schools

with Boys & Girls Champions

Hickleton Golf Club

6th April 2017

The South Yorkshire Schools Golf Championships were held at Hickleton Golf Club which was in great conditions for this time of year and was a real treat for all the players. It was a tough day with the wind really picking up through the day. The scoring at Hickleton was very mixed with some good scores along with some high ones as well. There were 2 tournaments on the day, there was an individual event and a team event. The individual event was an 18 hole gross medal format and the team event was the combined stableford points from the teams comprising the best 2 scores from 3 players. Any coutbacks were decided on the 3rd players score. Balby had 12 players in the event making up 4 teams of 3 players in which they were looking for a good result.

It was a successful day for balby as they cleaned up in the individual competition with  students finishing as champions and runner up in the under 19s. Luke Palmowski +1 (Hicketon Golf Club, right) battling through the wind and finishing with a great score of 2 over par 73 which won the event by 3 shots over Harry Emmingham 5 (Birley Wood Golf course) who played really well and finished up with a solid round of 76 which earned him 2nd place on countback from another Balby Player Oliver Sullivan (5 Phoenix Golf Club). Balby also had success in the girl’s individual with Nicola Slater (1 Lindrick Golf Club, left) winning the girls under 19s with a gross 77.

Balby also had great success in the team event with 2 teams narrowly missing out on the top spot but still finishing in the top 3. Finishing 2nd by a single point to Wath Academy was Balby Academy of sport D, who finished up with a score of 72 with Oliver Sullivan 5 (Phoenix Golf Club) playing really well and finished with 36 points this was matched by team mate Kavan Gough 10 (Phoenix Golf Club) who battled after a tough start and also finished with 36 points. The last man in this 3 man team was Liam Bennett 7 (Retford Golf Club) who struggled but battled to finish with 31 points which meant the team  was level par and just missing out on top spot by 1 point. The last place on the podium was taken by Balby Academy of sport A where Harry Emmingham 5 (Birley Wood Golf Club) shot a great score of 36 points. This was the best score in this team closely followed by Luke Palmowski +1 (Hickleton Golf Club) who had 1 bad hole but still managed to pull through and shoot 34 points this gave a total score of 70 points, the third score for the team was 32 points from Tom Guttridge 5 (Sandhill Golf Club). The 2 other teams that Balby entered didn’t have their best days scoring wise but still battled and finished 6th and 7th it was Balby Academy of sport C which finished 6th in this team there was George Marsden in year 10 (16 Wheatley Golf Club) who played really well and came in with best score from Balby with 37 points. Also in this team was Declan Stoppard 10 (Doncaster Golf Club) who battled on a tough day and finished with 32 points. The last player was Jack Harris 10 (Doncaster Golf Club) who finished up with 30 points. Then the Balby Academy of sport B this team was made up with Nicola Slater 1 (Lindrick Golf Club) who shot a respectable score of 33 points. Next in the team was Harrison Naylor 5 (Phoenix Golf Club) played well and finished up with 35 points. From this competition the top 2 teams move onto the next stage which is the Yorkshire Schools Championship which is held at Low Laithes on the 28th of April 2017. Also the Yorkshire Schools Union also picks individuals that will go to the North of England Schools Championships in the May Half Term Holidays.

The South Yorkshire Schools Golf Championships was organised by Balby Academy of Sport students. This is completed for their Organising a Sport Event assignment as part of their BTEC course. All of the organisation went well with the event running really smoothly and this was due to everyone’s help and organisation. All of the students were commended on their professional manner as well as the superb organisation throughout the day
