National Finals of the British
Schools and Colleges as Undefeated Champions
Wednesday 29th March 2017
Torksey Golf Club
In the final round of the British Schools and Colleges local League, Balby managed to qualify both of their teams to the national finals at Forest of Arden in May of this year. The conditions on the day were mild which meant that the greens were firm, leading to a tough scoring day overall. The best score of the day came from Luke Palmowski (right Hickleton Golf Club +1) who shot a 1 under 70 to secure top sport in the individual order of merit despite missing a round at the start of the season.
This impressive display left them top of both the gross and nett local league tables. The par 71 course was made challenging by the firm greens and slight winds but that didn't stop Balby from scoring well and securing victory. As mentioned earlier, Balby Carr's A's first player Luke Palmowski (Hickleton Golf Club, +1) shot a very good 70 which was the best score of the day meaning that he overtook the 2 players that were above him in the individual order of merit. The second player for Balby's A team was Nicola Slater (Lindrick Golf Club, 1) who shot a score of 5 over which was well battled on a tough course.
The third player for Balby's A team was Harrison Naylor (Phoenix Golf Club , 5) who shot another well battled score after not playing as well as he has proved previously, with a 6 over par 77. The final player was Tom Guttridge (Rotherham Golf Club, 5) who struggled on the front 9 but managed to scramble a round of 79 (8 over). Balby's B team consisted of Harry Emmingham (Birley Wood Golf Club, 5) who shot a very steady score of 71 which is level par, Oliver Sullivan (Phoenix Golf Club, 5) who shot another great score for the B team with a 75 (4 over), the third player for the B team was Liam Bennett (Retford Golf Club, 7) who shot a disappointing round of 80 to his normal standards. The final B team player was Declan Stoppard (Doncaster Golf Club, 10) who shot a 13 over par 84 after struggling on the back 9. The other 3 Balby players were Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines Golf Club, 3) 78, Kavan Gough (Phoenix Golf Club, 9) 81 and Jack Harris (Doncaster Town Moor Golf Club, 10) who shot 78 which was 3 under his handicap and a great round on the day.
The combined score for Balby's team were 225 for the A team who won the gross on the day to the B team who had a combined score of 226. In the nett competition, the B team grabbed top spot with a combined score of 209, the nearest competitor was Derby college on 212. The nett score for the A team was 217.
Balby had 4 players in the top 6 in the individual order of merit. Luke Palmowski took top spot after missing a round with a final score of 87.5, fending off Harry Emmingham and Nicola Slater who finished on 81. The next best Balby player was Harrison Naylor who finished 4th on 80.5. The next spot for Balby was 6th where Liam Bennett ended up on 54.5. Overall this is a great result for Balby who are undefeated in this league, securing their place in the national finals at Forest of Arden in May. Hopefully the warm weather training tour to Portugal in the Easter Holidays will get the team fully prepared for these finals.
